La Cerdanya - Heart of the Pyrenees

La Cerdanya

La Cerdanya is a valley of the eastern Pyrenees, of glacial origin. The valley starts at an altitude of 1000m and is surrounded by peaks that are almost 3000m high. It is a valley whose characteristics make it almost unique in Europe, both for its size and altitude as for its orientation (it extends from east to west). Its landscapes are impressive and very wide, it has many hours of sunshine and a characteristic climate.

Administratively it is very divided and this also makes it unique. Despite being a geographically well defined valley, it has been historically divided between two states (Spanish and French) by the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), and also divided between two provinces, Girona and Lleida (1833).

Until the late twentieth century, the main economic activity was agriculture and livestock, and this shaped the landscape of La Cerdanya giving it a variety of colors and different shades that added to the existing ones and that still remains today. You can see, in most of the valley, fields of cereal crops and grassy meadows populated by cows or Spanish-Breton horses (typical and characteristic of the region). This makes it ideal for those who like the countryside, nature and the mountains.

Currently, tourism has become the main economic activity of La Cerdanya, and together with the technological evolution of society in general, has led to an improvement in access, equipment and services. Becoming even more attractive both in summer, for the offer of leisure activities, and in winter for the practice of winter sports.
