Puigcerdà - Gateway to the Cerdanya region
Puigcerdà
Puigcerdà is the largest town in Cerdanya and also its capital. It is located on the podium Ceretanum, a hill located in the center of the region and that conditions its characteristic silhouette. It is also right on the artificial dividing line that divides Cerdanya between the two states.
Puigcerdà is an active and lively town with interesting tourist attractions, streets to stroll and shop, idyllic landscapes such as the lake, surrounded by green in summer, frozen in winter, and emblematic monuments. Some of them are: the bell tower, the last witness of the old church of Santa Maria from the 13th century; the remains of the old convent of Sant Domènec, which now houses the library and the archive; the old main square, arcaded, nowadays Cabrinetty square. But what most characterizes the village is its central location in a geographical region such as Cerdanya and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The village was founded in 1178 by Alfons I to be the new capital of the comtat de Cerdanya. It was one of the most important towns in Catalonia during the late Middle Ages. For centuries the main activity of Puigcerdà has been trade, which was boosted with the arrival of the first tourism in the late nineteenth century and the railroad at the beginning of the last century.
Puigcerdà has unique events such as "la fira" equine fair held in November and is one of the most important in the country; the festival of the lake, with a parade of floats, and the festival of the bell tower, both in summer.
For sports lovers there is a sports club with good facilities, such as the ice rink, home of the Club Gel Puigcerdà, the ice hockey team with a long history and many titles won at the state level
